ARTIST STATEMENT

My work relates to the landscape. Its emotional impact on me by not only its beauty but also the impact we as a species have on its memory, its present and future. In this exhibition I explore the trees in our land in two mediums. Painting & Drawing. Looking at 3 types of trees; the Gum, the Fig or Banyan & the Mangrove

As our companions in this landscape, it has been a harsh journey, they are a part of, unwilling companions to our impositions of changes. Mangroves like Figs… hold their memories like badges. They show the scars of their lives with pride for all to see.

Unlike the gum which sheds its bark each year... like putting on a new dress Mangroves & Figs are witnesses to the memories of the landscape. Many have fallen to human settlement but in the darker places under the canopy they spread. You can see their true selves, with their walking legs. The Gum tree has its own story to tell, they shadowy valleys where the hide now as all their brothers are moved out for our own uses of the land, here they stand hoping to be the straightest and best so they may live and lay seed form more to cover the land but what future do they really have?
